Web Accessibility

A website usable by everyone

What is Web Accessibility?

Web accessibility means a website can be used by people with visual, hearing, motor, or cognitive impairments, as well as by older people. It includes sufficient text contrast, readable fonts, image descriptions, keyboard navigation, clear forms, and a correct heading structure for screen readers. The international standard is WCAG. Since June 2025, the European Accessibility Act (EAA) applies, covering many e-shops and digital services. Accessibility concerns design, content, and code.

Why It Matters

An inaccessible website excludes customers who would otherwise buy or send an inquiry. For many companies selling online, accessibility has also become a legal requirement under the EAA. Features that help people with impairments improve the experience for everyone, for example on a phone in bright sunlight. A correct structure and image descriptions also help search engines understand the content. Accessibility is cheaper to address during design than to retrofit into a finished website.

Real-World Examples

  • 1Text with sufficient contrast against the background.
  • 2Alt text for product photos in an e-shop.
  • 3A form that can be completed and submitted using only the keyboard.
  • 4A visible highlight on the element that currently has focus.
  • 5Form error messages that don't rely on color alone.
